Indira Martina Morre | Signs
Opening Reception is Saturday, May 10, 6- 8:00 pm
Dates of Exhibitions: May 8 - June 4, 2014
Green Chalk Contemporary presents Indira Martina Morre: Signs at its new space in the heart of The Lighthouse District, New Monterey.
Indira Martina Morre’s latest series of paintings is a contemplative allegory of psychological shifts in a technology-driven society. Images are combined- suggestive of naturally occurring shapes and patterns such as neurons and stars. Shapes are generated from the artificial world of computer language- passwords, data bodies, symbols, networks with an endless number of dots, circles, lines, crosses, and arrows as a map- a handmade network of a presence in time, a mark. Morre uses graphite and ink in alternate multiple layers of drawing within thin applications of gesso. This allows her to maintain a smooth, paper-like surface which becomes a diary of daily overlapping entries. The result creates the appearance of complicated perceptual depth.
Indira Martina Morre received her BA, with a double major in Art History and Art Practice, and her MFA from UC Berkeley. Morre is the recipient of numerous awards including The Harry Ford Lord Award and The Eisner Prize in Art. Her work was recently exhibited at Croatian Association of Artists in Zagreb, Royal NoneSuch Gallery in Oakland, Berkeley Art Museum, Berkeley Art Center, MarinMOCA, SFMOMA Artist Gallery, and Cain Schulte Contemporary Art Gallery in San Francisco. Currently, Morre teaches painting and drawing classes at UC Berkeley Art Department.
